Help kids have holiday fun

A local youth club in Hout Bay is planning a holiday programme which will accommodate 100 children during the upcoming school holidays.

The 790 Youth Rec Club wants the programme to run for the duration of the holidays from Thursday 8 December to Tuesday 10 January.

Roscoe Jacobs, youth coordinator and founder of the club, says their main aim is to keep children occupied during the holidays.

“We plan to host the holiday programme to keep children fed and actively busy during the upcoming festive season. This period is a high-risk period in which children can either become victims and/or perpetrators of crime.

“Children who are actively involved in sport and recreational activities are less likely to commit crime, do drugs and join gangs. So having programmes running will help a lot in ensuring their safety,” he says.

The club is appealing for funds for the school holiday programme.

“We call on residents and businesses to contribute towards this planned holiday programme. The funds raised will be used to buy equipment, train volunteers and provide a daily meal for the children.

“The cost per week per child is R100, this includes something to eat each day. We have a lot of activities planned; we just need help to raise the money,” he says.

The 790 Youth Rec Club, which recently celebrated its first anniversary, offers activities like DJing, table tennis, badminton, dominoes and kerrim.

Its programmes run from Mondays to Wednesdays.

“We want to add activities such as photography, homework sessions and mentorship. Currently the DJing programme has a lot of interest but due to limited equipment attendance has to be limited. All this will help the children in the area.”
