Help learners to swim

2018-05-08 06:00

Camps Bay High learners are being given the chance to find their flippers – with the help of the community.

Camps Bay High School has started a Learn to Swim programme for high school learners who are unable to swim. They are calling for donations of unused, too small or single flippers to help these learners.

The programme was started at the beginning of this term, says school marketing manager Carol van der Spuy.

The learners participating in the programme have been identified and are being transported in the school bus to the primary school campus where they have an indoor heated pool, she explains.

“The indomitable Wendy Way, who has been teaching kids to swim at Camps Bay Primary, is teaching them,” she says.

“Our principal, David de Korte, felt it was shameful that at Camps Bay High School, known for its aquatics, there are learners unable to swim. His aim is that no pupil leaves the school not knowing how to swim, which we believe is a basic skill everyone should learn.”

Although too early to measure the impact the programme is having, “so far the learners participating seem to be really enjoying their Friday afternoon sessions with Wendy,” says Van der Spuy.

“We hope that it impacts on their self-esteem and confidence.”

Flippers can be dropped off at the high school reception.
