New Horizon Civic Association is prepared to act beyond their call of duty and feed empty tummies in honour Ramadaan at the Pelican Park Community Hall on Wednesday 22 May.

The association plans to host a special iftaar for the underprivileged in their community on the 16th night of Ramadaan.

They will first pray together outside the Sunni Jumu’ah Masjid and then move to the hall.

Mariam Davids, secretary for the association, says as a structure that works closely with residents, they understand the needs of the community and know that there are devoted Muslims that are also fasting and honouring the month even though they do not know whether they would have something to eat in the evenings.

It is for this reason that the association has agreed to appeal for donations for ingredients to prepare food for the special evening. These could be anything from savouries to ingredients for a boeber.

“Every little contribution will help. Once we have enough, we will decide on what dish we will be preparing.”

Davids says though they do not encourage financial donations as they want to provide physical interaction and show unity to their beneficiaries, they will not close their doors to those who want to be part of making a difference.

She says the direct involvement of the residents will remind those in need that they are part of the community that is being cared for.

Davids adds they are hoping to feed more than 100 people of all ages after the massive prayer they will hold to break their fast.

She says the New Horizon community is made up of many underprivileged people who face social issues daily while trying to make ends meet and live by the laws.

Davids says through joint effort they cannot only feed empty tummies but revive their faith in God.

“This is a holy month where we should not discriminate or do wrong to others. We are all seeking the grace of God but if we do not stand up for each other, are we still serving and living by his will,” Davids concludes.
