Help save a life

2018-10-16 06:00

I read with interest the article on “Need for more blood donations” (People’s Post, 9 October).

I remember, when in my 20s, I started donating blood at the Hillbrow Blood Transfusion Centre in Johannesburg. In those days, the blood was collected in glass bottles which were under pressure, and as soon as the clip on the tube from the arm into the bottle, was released, the blood spurted into the glass container rather like a fountain.

I have been donating regularly, and the other day I received a gift from the Western Cape Blood Transfusion at the Blue Route donation centre for having donated 75 units.

I have found it extremely important to donate blood and gather that up-to-date my blood has been used in over 200 operations – which I think is one of the important factors that donators should realise. By donating, you are in all probability saving lives!
