Your generosity could make the dreams of 16 Hout Bay Hurricanes basketball players come true.

They need R320 000 to cover their travelling costs, as well as those of their coaches, to the United States of America (USA) in June. They will be participating in a USA basketball summer camp.

They held a fundraising event at Hout Bay Sport Centre on Friday 27 April, but due to the rainy weather, they only managed to raise little money towards their target.

“The weather impacted the fundraiser and we only raised R1150. We had to move it from the Salamander Road Park to the Hout Bay Sport Centre as it rained,” says head coach, Conroy Meter.

Meter urges the public to support them through their backabuddy fundraising form available at https://¬www.backabuddy.co.za/-champion/project/¬hout-bay-hurricanes-b¬asketball-club.

Explaining their trip to the USA, he says: “We were invited by American NGO Meet and Teach. We are aiming to send 16 players and four coaches, to open the horizon of our players and young people in our community about the opportunities outside our community and the current socio-economic conditions within and expose the players to basketball expertise and up their basketball IQ and skills,” Meter says.

He says the two-year-old team has a partnership with Meet and Teach.

Meter says the team was established in 2016 with the aim to keep young people off the streets, teach them discipline and show them a better way of living. He says the club was started after realising there was no alternative to the mainstream sports such as soccer in the community. The team has players between the ages of 11 and 16.

“Basketball is not a sport but a way of life. Young people need to live a balanced life. Education is key to success, however sport helps with being productive and successful.”V For more information, email atroscoejacobs@hotmail.com.
