Village Care and Aged Centre in Lavender Hill has received much-needed donations for the elderly from a non-profit organisation working in the area.

New Living Hope donated to the centre after the members of the NPO saw an article in People’s Post (“Seniors need donations”, 12 December).

The founder of New Living Hope, Elrich Herman, says that seeing the article was a sign that they had to help the centre.

“The article mentioned that the elderly needed help mainly with food. We felt this was a sign for us and then with all the donations of food, bedding and vegetables we went to introduce ourselves to the centre manager. When we got there my heart dropped to see our seniors in need. Even with all the help they need, they still smile and sing songs to pass the time. They love sitting outside and playing dominos, chatting and enjoy one another’s company. Although they go through so much they are still happy. We are glad that we could add to those smiles with the donations we gave them,” he says.

What was most heartbreaking for the members of the NPO was discovering that the elderly have to share walkers to get around. “Through the help of other people we managed to donate a walker and a wheelchair. We are asking for help from anyone who can assist with donations for these seniors. They really need all our help.

“We have been dropping off food parcels and vegetables every week and sometimes fruit and sweets treat for teatime. We are so pleased that we saw that article, so we can now assist not only Mandolin Place Senior Home in Steenberg, The Bush informal settlement in Nector Road, Steenberg, Lofob (League of the Friends of the Blind) in Grassy Park, and our home-base soup kitchen in Lakeview Drive in Retreat, but also Village Care and Aged Centre in Lavender Hill too,” concludes Herman.
