An aspiring young opera director needs help to raise funds to go to Germany to further his career in classical music.

The 29-year-old has scored an internship at Nationaltheater Mannheim from January to April next year.

But student Xolane Marman needs about R80 000 to cover his four-month stay.

In an attempt to raise the funds, he will be hosting a benefit concert in the UCT recital hall on Wednesday 13 December and at Erin Hall in Rondebosch on Friday from 18:00 to 19:30.

Entry costs R100 for adults and R80 for pensioners and learners.

He says the concert is another attempt to add to his online crowdfunding page and his savings.

He appeals to the public to choose how they want to help him fulfil his dream.

“I would love everyone’s support no matter how little.

“I would also like to request that we all support this slowly growing industry in South Africa. I hope that I would get more people to the stage productions and opera concerts. The audience will be treated to great opera tunes and classical numbers from Mozart, Puccini and Bellini to Donizetti. Artists will include George Stevens, internationally renowned baritone and opera lecturer at UCT, and Patric Tikolo, head of vocal studies at UCT’s Opera School. Some UCT opera alumni will also be part of the programme.”

He says he has always liked classical music. After high school he decided to turn his passion into a career when he enrolled at the Opera School in 2011.

In 2015 he became an assistant director for opera directors in the university production and directed his first two operas for UCT last year. This year he says he directed two operas for the Opera School, La clemenza di Tito by Mozart and La serva padrona by Pergolesi.

Marman says: “I felt more at ease with directing and sharing my stage experience with people. I then applied for programmes in a few opera houses for experience and was lucky to be accepted by Nationaltheater Mannheim.

“I am very much in love and most comfortable with classical music. It’s not just entertainment or loving the art, but the discipline one gets with the art.

“I wish we could do more local opera productions, which tells the stories of our people daily living in South Africa. I see myself still being a part-time stage performer in big opera stages.

“As a director I would like to see more cultural exchanges with countries that lead in the opera industry. I do not see myself staying and working outside South Africa, I see myself bringing the culture here and growing the industry,” says Marman.

He says this opportunity will help him become a well-skilled director and open doors for him to grow and be able to give back to a new generation of classical music singers.

“This opportunity has already lined up a few productions which I will come back and do here in South Africa next year for the Darling Music Company and the Opera School.”

He defines a good director as: A great director knows how to present an opera in the intent of the composer. A director should be able to take an old work and be able to tell it in current times. It takes passion, dedication, creativity and understanding of the art, he says.
