She already knows she wants to pursue a career in dance, and competing on the world stage will be just another step closer to that goal, but she needs help getting there.

Zea van Reenen (15) from Rocklands is a dedicated hip-hop dancer with her goals set on competing at Dance Star hosted in Croatia in May. With more than R60 000 needed for the trip and to compete, her parents Adrian and Lameez have been fundraising to help their daughter realise her dreams.

Zea started dancing at a young age and competed in her first talent show while on holiday with her family.

“She was three-years-old when she went on stage for the first time at a talent show that was hosted at Goudini Spa when we were on holiday. That was the first time she performed,” says Lameez.

She has dabbled in many different genre’s before deciding on hip-hop as her dance style of choice.

Since then she has competed in several dance competitions and has been developing her craft, even getting paid for a performance at a newspaper’s birthday bash when she was only six-years-old.

This is her first time travelling abroad for competition.

“If we look back at when she started dancing we could see the gift and the talent she had for dancing,” says Adrian.

“She has gained experience, until the day she told us that this was going to be her career path.”

Her goal is to study dance as her major and become a choreographer and travel spreading her love and passion for dance, then ultimately giving back by becoming a dance teacher.

Zea says she is excited and nervous about representing South Africa at the competition and has been working hard on rehearsals and choreography to get ready for the competition.

“They have great judges and they will be attending workshops everyday while in Croatia,” says Lameez.

Although young, Zea encourages others to follow their dreams and give their all to achieving them.

They will leave for Croatia on Saturday 20 May with qualifiers and competition officially starting on Monday 22 May.

Some of their other fundraisers include a pamper party, matinee disco, a raffle for a three-night stay at Goudini Spa for four and a snack dance.

Their next fundraiser will be a snack dance with live entertainment from local band Jazz About. The event will be held this Saturday 29 April at the Weltevreden Recreation Centre. Tickets will cost R80 and you are asked to take your own platter and drinks. Raffle tickets cost R100 and the draw will be done on Saturday 29 April. For more information or for raffle tickets call Adrian on 083 418 8010.
