Helpful tips at the ATM

2017-11-21 06:01

Sea Point police have warned residents to be vigilant against ATM crime as the festive season approaches.

ATM crime tends to occur between 18:00 and 20:00 on all days of the week, says police spokesperson Captain Elizabeth Munro.

She adds that the police have identified hotspots for the crime and that there is a task team operating to reduce the robberies.

Munro suggests the following tips to increase safety when using ATMs:

. Punch in the pin with one hand while covering the key pad with the other.

. Do not accept any help from bystanders.

. Be vigilant of people who approach and attempt to distract you while performing a transaction.

. Use ATMs that are well lit and where security is present.

. Use ATMs attached to banks as they tend to have better security.

. Always wait for the ‘Welcome’ screen to be displayed after completing a transaction.

“It is necessary to remember that ATM fraud is a never-ending battle since there is currently no permanent solution.

“There are various techniques fraudsters use to steal information, including card skimming, keypad jamming, leaving cards or pins and card swopping,” she says.
