Another Mitchell’s Plain resident has been awarded Lead SA’s Hero of the Month title for his efforts to get youngsters reading, including visiting all 46 primary schools in Mitchell’s Plain.

Roscoe Williams has been named Hero of the Month for September. He is a programme manager at an education NGO called Read to Rise.

The aim of Read to Rise is to get libraries of books in English, Xhosa and Afrikaans into every classroom and to give every Grade 2 pupil his very own, inspirational book.

To date Williams has visited every primary school in Mitchell’s Plain, some of them more than once. He personally visits every principal, head of department and classroom.

Williams’s passion and love for education and the pupils are unquestionable.

He personally delivers a classroom lesson when he visits schools and believes reading is a way out of a life of crime.
