Hidden costs with prepaid meter

2018-07-17 06:00

Having had an unreliably read and inflated estimated electricity reading for the past four years, I elected to pay R2500 for a prepaid electricity meter so that I could monitor and manage my electricity [consumption].

Even though the City of Cape Town controls the price of electricity and increases it at their whim, and although I am still paying the same amount on usage now, I can at least monitor my readings myself on my prepaid keypad.

However, I was shocked to see that I am now being charged a usage fee of R130 per month on my prepaid meter which I own.

This is apparently an administrative fee.

So why bother with prepaid meters?

Maybe I must go back to the municipality reading/estimating my meter inconsistently and “guess-timating” my usage.

It might be cheaper!
