Police arrested five men in a botched hijacking in Grassy Park on Wednesday.

According to Steenberg police spokesperson, Warrant Officer John Bartlett, the National Intervention Unit (NIU) was briefed about a hijacked vehicle in the Retreat area during their morning patrols. The unit spotted a silver Audi and a black Hyundai Tucson.

“They chased the vehicles, which sped off in the direction of Grassy Park. The officers observed one of the suspects pointing a firearm at them. The officers retaliated with fire and the cars were forced to a standstill at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Prince George Drive in Grassy Park,” says Bartlett.

Five men, aged between 24 and 36, were arrested, one firearm was seized.

“One of the suspects sustained a gunshot wound to his shoulder. The Tucson had reportedly been hijacked in the Kleinvlei policing precinct. The Audi had not been reported as stolen,” Bartlett adds.

Cases of attempted murder, possession of a hijacked vehicle, and possession of firearms and ammunition without a licence have been opened for investigation at Steenberg Police Station.

V Anyone with information relating to this incident is urged to contact Steenberg police on 021 702 9000 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
