Hijacking victims rescued by NSRI

2016-11-29 06:01

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) came to the rescue of a couple on Friday night who had apparently been hijacked.

According to Vaughn Seconds, NSRI’s Strandfontein station commander, the NSRI Strandfontein station hosted a pre-season get-together on Friday night when they received the information from local fishermen.

“At approximately 22:30 we were activated by local fishermen reporting a couple appearing to be in trouble on the beach north of Strandfontein beach.

“We dispatched our sea rescue vehicle and our rescue quad bike.

“On arrival on the scene we found an abandoned vehicle in amongst the sand dunes and we [allerted] the police,” he says.

Seconds says the police patrol car picked up the couple, who were said to be running along Lukkanon Drive along the beachfront.

Both were in shock, reporting to have been hijacked by a group of men who had followed them while they were leaving Mitchell’s Plain in their car.

The hijackers had driven their car into the sand dunes but the couple was able to escape.

Seconds says the police brought the couple to the sea rescue base in Strandfontein where medics treated them for shock.

Police are investigating the incident.
