For a local artist, Roeshdien ‘Mr Jaz’ Jass of Athlone, music is not just about singing, but rather a tool to uplift and empower society.

He recently visited his childhood place of charity, Christine Revell Children’s Home, where he was touched by the hard work and dedication shown by the staff despite the circumstances they face in their communities. He was inspired to also do his part.

Jass is committing to donate some of the funds from digital sales of his new reggae single titled Sing to me of hope to the home to help it to replace some of the old essentials required to nurture and care for the babies.

“This song will be used as a special, timeless tribute, every year for both Youth Day on 16 June and International Youth Day on 12 August to continue to raise awareness.

“The fundamental intent is to use music as a medium for social change and transformation, elevating awareness around some of the continued challenges facing our children in our communities, and a little call to action in the form of supporting an organisation very close to heart,” Jass says.

The intention for the proceeds, regardless of the amount accumulated annually, is to continue to go towards the home, “even beyond my life span, God willing.”

Jass says his music is inspired by two late artists Nina Simone and Tupac Amaru Shakur who, also through their music, wanted to make a positive impact in their communities and its people.

“We as creatives need to remain cognitive of the social and moral responsibilities that inherently come with creating, be it art, poetry or music.

“Artists have a privilege of creating something that will potentially outlive us and continue to touch lives. We must never lose the sight of this precious privilege,” says Jass.

He says music empowers, connects and mobilises, and inspires people despite their social standards.

He is driven and passionate about people’s development.

Outside the music industry, Jass works as a leadership development specialist and personal development coach.V For more information about his music visit www.roeshdienjaz.com.
