Council libraries and recreational facilities will keep young ones busy during the short spring school holiday with awareness programmes, crafts, games, movies and sports activities.

Parents need not worry about how they will keep their children busy this holiday, as the City of Cape Town’s Library and Information Services (LIS) Department and the Sport, Recreation and Amenities (SRA) Department will host a range of activities at many of the City’s community facilities during the short school holiday.

Between the two departments, provision has been made to ensure that learners will have hundreds of holiday events to choose from that will run daily from Monday 3 to Friday 7 October.

The programmes will be presented at the City’s various libraries, community centres, multipurpose centres, sports fields and parks. Each of the four districts within the SRA Department will use the services of volunteers to ensure that the programmes are implemented effectively, says Mayco member for community services, Anda Ntsodo.

“Programmes are designed to encourage children from communities throughout the city to participate in recreation, sport, crafts, and special events during the holiday. With a range of options to choose from, the programmes will still provide a dose of light learning but within fun and relaxed environments,’

Indoor programmes that will be hosted at community centres include board games, gymnastics, and indigenous games, while outdoor programmes include a variety of ball sports,” he says.

City libraries have got the little ones covered with arts and crafts, storytelling, puppet and DVD shows, games and life-skills programmes.

Residents can visit the City’s Library and Information Services website for the list of planned activities as well as the contact and location details of their local library: www.capetown.gov.za/library.
