A Constantia resident is spreading her wings in acting and living the American dream in Los Angeles.

Sarah Lea (22) just got a role in a series that will be distributed by Netflix towards the end of this year.

She portrays the timeless Hollywood actress Kim Novak and other series shows Novak’s love affair with Sammy Davis Jr before and during the US civil rights movement. Parts of the series were shot in Tokai. It is also about the scandals of old Hollywood and other notorious stories. The stories include that of Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe to name a few.

Lea says playing this role has been nothing but amazing.

“It’s a confirmation that I am enough and I am actually capable of booking amazing roles. It reignites your spirit every time you’re on a set like that, you just want more and more of it because it’s so true to who you are. I feel like my soul actually sings when I’m on set and it’s going well.”

For her role she had to learn how to drive a vintage Cadillac.

“I also got to learn so much about Kim Novak and the scandals of her love affair.”

“I also had so much fun with the director and director of photography that it makes such a difference to your performance. You feel comfortable and open to perform,” she says.

Lea didn’t expect to get the role. Having spent a greater part of her life between Joburg and Cape Town, she moved to New York four years ago where she studied acting for film at New York Film Academy. The first year was in NY the rest of the time was in LA. It included the Meisner Technique, stage combat, scene study, acting for film, voice and movement and many other subjects before her big break.

“I was on holiday in SA and my agent called me at the last minute and told me I had an audition in a few hours for a TV show where I would play Kim Novak. I raced home and did all the research and rehearsal I possibly could and auditioned for the role. A few days later they confirmed with my agent that I was booked and began shooting that same week,” she says.

“I had no idea what to expect going in and what they were looking for, but I’ve learned never to have expectations. You prepare to your best ability, go in and do the best for you and think of it as an opportunity just to practise your craft. And if you book it, great, but if not, you still had an opportunity just to play and perform. That way you don’t have those unfulfilled expectations or feeling of failure or not being good enough,” she adds.

Though it looks like she is on an unstoppable road to stardom, it didn’t come easy.

“The journey has been extremely hard at times. I have been built up and broken down and built up continuously, which teaches you to always stand in your power and know exactly who you are. In such a short space of time I have really grown and experienced so much and learnt so much that I feel would take most people a lifetime to see and experience.

“I have met the most amazing people and have such beautiful memories that if I had to die tomorrow, I’d know I experienced as much as I could and gave life my all,” she says.

Lea has been working her way up.

“I’ve been lucky enough to act in various different mediums. I’ve been in many music videos, with artists like Callum Scott. I was in an AirBNB commercial, I played one of the leads in a TV show in LA about police brutality. I have had a few supporting roles in movies, such a Detour, and other acting endeavors in pilots and in theatre,” she says.

Lea’s message to other young people is to go for it.

“If you really are passionate, that will carry you. But there are thousands of people who want the same job you do, so never do any less than your best. The integrity and passion for your work will set you apart.

“But the most important thing ever is to be yourself, never try to be someone they want you to be. You were born and moulded into the exact person you are for a very specific reason, so be true to that.”
