Home flavour spices up WRX

2017-10-24 06:01

South African rally drivers Mark Cronje and Ashley Haigh-Smith will be on the starting grid with the world’s best rally and rallycross drivers at Killarney on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 November.

The entry list for the 12th and final round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship in Cape Town includes legends like Sébastien Loeb, Petter Solberg, current leader Johan Kristoffersson, Mattias Ekström and Andres Bakkerud.

Cronje and Haigh-Smith will thrill an expected 30 000 visitors over the weekend in lightning-fast supercars accelerating from 0 to 100km/H in just 1.9 seconds – faster than Formula 1 cars.

Cronje will drive an Albatec Racing Peugeot 208 WRX and Haigh-Smith will compete in an Olsbergs MSE Ford Fiesta.

The weekend has a full programme of entertainment, including aerial displays on both days by the air force’s Silver Falcons.

As this is an international event, the event organisers have asked spectators to:

. Book tickets beforehand at ticketpros.co.za.

. Use public transport to get to Killarney or use park-n-ride or park-n-walk facilities near the track.

. Bring hats, sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes.

The following will not be allowed:

. Food, cooler boxes and drinks

. Umbrellas and fold-out chairs

. Weapons or dangerous objects

. Glass containers

. Drugs

. Drones

. Pets

Solberg, who was in South Africa for the event’s media launch in March, says: “I expect South Africa to become a fantastic event. What more would a motorsport-loving crowd want than a full world rallycross display of the roughest and fastest cars on the planet racing each other?”
