Subcouncil 20 held its annual civic awards at the civic centre last week.

Dudley Lewis and the Allenby Neighbourhood Watch were both honoured for the sterling work they have done within the community over the last 12 months.

Lewis has been a member of the Tramway FC since 2001 as a player and has served on the grounds committee since 2002 and he is a life member of the club.

“His commitment to youth development through sport is highly commendable. He started coaching the u.7 juniors and during his tenure the club has seen the junior division numbers rise from around 30 juniors to over 400 juniors today,” said councillor for ward 72, Kevin Southgate.

Lewis has been responsible for the development of numerous boys who have gone on to join the Ubuntu Academy where the children are provided with free schooling from selected private schools. They have also seen some players join other academies such as Ajax, JMI and FC Kaapstad.

He has also been actively involved with the FMC of the Groenewald Complex since 2014 and during this time the facility has experienced many improvements.

“Dudley continues to commit his time, energy and resources to ensure that the club and more so the youth are presented with alternatives to the negative influences that our youth are confronted with on a daily basis and this is evident when one visits the Groenewald sports facility. Dudley’s exemplary commitment to community service makes him a worthy recipient of the City of Cape Town’s Community Service Award,” Southgate said.

Meanwhile, Allenby Neighbourhood Watch was nominated for the award based on the dedication and commitment they have shown which has yielded positive results and foiled many attempts at crime by would-be perpetrators.

The volunteers were thanked, along with their families, who had to lend their husbands, wives and children in allowing them to help protect their neighbourhood.

“Your selfless commitment and dedication to the cause is highly commendable and it is therefore my privilege and honour to confer upon you the civic award for recognition of the service to the community and the care and wellbeing of others in the city,” said Southgate.

He added that every year he tries to identify worthy recipients, but that organisations should also come forward and nominate people or other organisations who they feel have done outstanding community work.

“These are people who really offer up of themselves, their time and their resources to really protect the community and to uplift the community. It is not something that you compete for, it is something that, as the ward councillor, I monitor over a period of 12 months. Also organisations themselves are called upon every year to nominate people. If there is anybody in your organisation that you feel has done sterling work, then you have an opportunity to nominate them for consideration for the award.”
