Hospices for children

Concerns have been raised regarding the availability of hospices for children living with cancer (“Support for sick children”, People’s Post, 12 June.)

In the article, the founders of the Rohan Bloom Foundation were quoted as stating that there are no hospices for cancer-affected children in Cape Town.

Following a caller’s advice, it was discovered that although there are no specific facilities for children living with cancer, there are places that do offer help for terminally ill children, with some taking in cancer patients as well.

. St Luke’s Hospice has various facilities for children aged 12 years and older.

. Paedspal is a NGO in Rondebosch and Dr Michelle Meiring, a founding partner of the Rohan Bloom Foundation, is the CEO.

.Iris House in Durbanville deals more with physically and intellectually challenged children and offers daycare. Sue van der Linde, its founder, says: “Our children’s hospice is for any children with limiting and life-threatening conditions.”

.Heartlands Baby Sanctuary in Somerset West is another. CEO, Monica Buitendag, says: “I am not aware of any other hospices (residential care) for children with cancer except for us. We do sometimes admit children with cancer.”

. Fiona Mclennan of PatchSa in Rondebosch and Wynberg says: “There is no children’s hospice in Cape Town at this stage, but there is an organisation called Paedspal. A hospice should have a doctor available and nursing care on site and should offer respite and end-of-life care that may take several weeks at a time. As far as I understand, Iris House deals with physically and intellectually challenged children.”
