Two local performers will be on stage in the Artscape Arena this week in The Waterfront Theatre College’s new production Hit me with a Hot Note.
Newlands’ Nadine Suliaman and Nicole Jacobs from Rondebosch will be among the students performing from Wednesday 13 to Saturday 16 July.
Conceived by Delia Sainsbury, Hit me with a Hot Note is inspired by the opening line of the famous jazz song “Hit me with a Hot Note and watch me dance!”.
“I want to explore the use of rhythm across a range of dance genres,” Delia explains, adding: “presenting a new generation of choreographers and the growing wealth of dance talent.”
Hit me with a Hot Note is designed to highlight the well-rounded and versatile disciplines The Waterfront Theatre College offers.
Paul Griffiths, partner of the college, says: “The opportunity for young artists to work in a professional theatre environment further enriches the practical training programme offered by the college and deepens the understanding of the work they are training to do.“
Some of the students performing in Hit me with a Hot Note, like final year students Nadine and Nicole; have already gained experience in previous productions.
Nadine is a trained singer, actress and dancer and is currently studying to get her Teaching Diploma in Drama. Last year she won the award for the Best Jazz Choreography at the Waterfront theatre school. She has appeared in many shows at the college including Footloose the Musical, Legally Blonde The Musical and The Crucible along with many other dance shows, corporate events and musical theatre revues.
This will be the fourth Artscape performance for Nicole, who majors in dance and drama.
As a 22-year -old who will be entering the industry next year, she can easily say that her passion and excitement for performing has only grown since her first year. Nicole is thrilled for the show and can’t wait for everyone to come through and support the college and all their hard work.
In addition to highlighting the best of the college’s dance faculty, Hit me with a Hot Note is a fundraising event for The Waterfront Theatre College Bursary Fund which helps support young artists who may not have the resources to access further training. All proceeds from the show go to funding a future generation of dance practitioners.
V Hit me with a Hot Note will be staged from Wednesday 13 to Saturday 16 July at 20:00 with a 15:00 matinee show on Saturday. Tickets cost R120 from Computicket or from Artscape Dial-a-Seat on 021 421 7695.
