Senior residents in Ottery were invited out to the Ottery Civic Centre in Bruce Road last week to be treated to a day of safety and wellness. The event, on Thursday 14 March was organised and hosted by the City of Cape Town’s social development department and ward 66 councillor William Akim.

Mayor Dan Plato was the event’s honourary guest. Various guest speakers present at the event covered issues of safety for the seniors.

“Law enforcement also did a safety demonstration and self-defence tips of which a few seniors participated in,” says Shanaaz Sulaiman-Davids, chairperson of Ottery NHW/safety watch.

She adds the health and wellness portion was covered by representatives from the Klip Road Clinic as well as Lotus River day hospital. “The highlight of the event, aside from the mayor, was the handing over of a wheelchair to Emma Ligwa, who will be celebrating her 99th birthday in April. Ligwa still does her own laundry by hand, cleans her own house and threads a needle without needing specs,” says Sulaiman-Davids.

The wheelchair was donated by Plato after meeting Ligwa for the first time at the event. “Ligwa was noticeably teary-eyed and grateful for the honour bestowed upon her. According to her, she was just invited to the event and never expected to be made a fuss of,” she adds.

Even though she came by car, Ligwa insisted on being pushed home in her wheelchair, as it has been a while since she was able to go out into the community that has been her home for almost five decades.

“The day started with excitement, as I do not go anywhere anymore but ended off with much joy and happiness,” Ligwa said.
