A new chairperson for the Kensington Community Policing Forum (CPF) was elected on Tuesday (22 January) at the Shawco Hall.

This followed the resignation of Fay Naggia, who took up a permanent position at the Western Cape Department of Community Safety last year.

Former deputy chairperson Erica Isaacs won the election by a majority vote and is excited to have been elected.

“Although I was the acting chairperson since my predecessor resigned, I did not expect to be elected. It is good to know that community members have confidence that I can make a difference,” she said.

Isaacs told People’s Post that she looks forward to working with members of the community to end the ongoing violence.

One of her strategies in achieving this is to engage with the community on an ongoing basis.

“I will be going door-to-door and personally speaking to community members to establish the core problems and coming up with suggestions. I will also constantly be available to engage with citizens of this community.”

A new deputy chairperson was also elected and Marcia Herrington from Kenston Watch is the new member who will take up this position.

The Department of Community Safety conducted the elections to make sure that everything ran smoothly.

Apart from the elections, an annual general meeting which raised the issue of organisational unity was held.

“As the CPF, we have listed isolation as one of the challenges, especially among organisations that serve this community. We believe that the impact will be bigger if organisations work together,” said Cheslyn Steenberg, secretary of the CPF.

He said residents seemed to understand the importance of the CPF and the purpose it serves in the community.
