Illegal gun conviction

Mitchell’s Plain Police secured the successful prosecution of 34-year-old Riaz Wilkinson for the possession of an unlicenced firearm.

Detective Ashley Donough secured the successful conviction.

The accused was sentenced to eight years imprisonment.

Of this sentence, three years have been wholly suspended for five years on condition that the accused is not convicted of possession of a firearm during the period of suspension.

If he is to transgress this, the accused will be sentenced to a term of imprisonment without option of fine.

Information was received through circulation and a firearm was found in possession of the suspect.

Wilkinson was arrested for possession of an unlicensed black 19 Glock firearm with 13 live police rounds. The incident occurred in December 2014.

Police will maintain a zero tolerance approach in the combating and investigation crime.
