Increased listenership on radios

Cape Town commercial music stations are celebrating increases in listenership.

The Broadcast Research Council of South Africa (BRC) Radio Audience Measurement (RAM) was released last Wednesday.

Kfm 94.5, has reached a milestone that not many stations in the province get to celebrate often.

The station was announced to have smashed the record for the highest number of listeners in the province and the figures showed that the station has crossed the milestone of more than 900 000 listeners per week. The survey indicated that the station has 944 000 listeners, up to 869 000 diary-on-diary, an impressive increase in audience.

This means that Kfm 94.5 is the biggest regional station in the Western Cape.

Programme manager at the station, Stephen Werner, said all this was the result of their promise made to the Kfm 94.5 listeners.

“Repositioning the station to suit the audience’s taste and interests forms part of us being where we are at the moment. We have always had the audience in mind when strategising,” Werner said.

He also said that the team appreciates the input the listeners send into the station daily and the station could not have chosen a better team to work with.

“The entire team has been amazing, the contribution, making sure that they are doing the best they can do, taking feedback and working with it, striving for excellence, being consistently good and having the same set of goals has also helped a lot.”

The young Smile 90.4 FM has increased its listenership to over 212 000. Programming manager Naveen Singh said the results were phenomenal for the station. “We love doing what we do and that infectious energy is now transferring to our listeners. We have an exciting second half planned for 2019 that is set to thrill, entertain and continue to deliver the best programming for our listeners” Singh said.

He said the station’s No Repeat Workday where the audience is guaranteed not to hear the same song between 09:00 and 17:00 has resulted in the daily time spent listening increasing to a new high.

He further said that Smile Breakfast and Smile Drive have shown an increase in listenership. “Our personalities becoming household names, stronger promotions with more to win and the best music has grown Smile 90.4 FM’s attraction to listeners.

Good Hope FM has also increased its listenership to 628 000. Station manager Brenden Ficks said the appointment of the youngest breakfast show host Dan Corder has helped with the numbers.

He also said the station strives to remain the breeding ground of legends through the ongoing pursuit of finding new talent.

“The team at Good Hope FM is thrilled to be celebrating this growth. Good Hope FM would like to thank the loyal listeners for their continued support,” Ficks said.
