Influencer hopes to inspire community to assist others

A 22-year-old from Eagle Park is appealing to the community to assist those around them.

Rizqah Cato, a nano-influencer, says she wants to inspire the community to do more for others and to help those in need despite the challenges faced by those living in Eagle Park, the area situated between Lotus River and Pelican Park.

Nano-influencers may not have as high a number of followers as major influencers do, but the effect they have on the community is deeply felt.

According to Cato, her sister and her mother have big hearts and they are always trying to do what they can for the community. She says she gets her kind-heartedness from her mother, Shamiela Dollie and sister, Roekshana Dollie.

“My sister is the one who cooks up a storm, making food to hand out, and my mother does all the driving around,” she says.

Cato says she lives close to Phumlani informal settlement and sees what is happening in the community. She just wants to lend a helping hand.

“Children are running around in the streets and people are sitting and drinking on the pavement,” she says.

Cato says she wishes people with a large social media presence would use their voice to encourage their followers to assist communities in need. “If it were me who needed help, I would want people to reach out and help me,” she says.

A few years ago, Cato was part of a non-profit organisation, Making Originality Beautiful (MOB). The organisation hosted fashion shows to raise money to be ploughed back into the community.

Cato says the organisation was established because they wanted to do something fun to keep teenagers off the streets while raising money for the community. Even though this project fizzled out, she is looking at new ways to do something good for the community and surrounding areas.

She says she dreams of a future where sanitary pads will be freely available because she knows not everyone can afford them. But, for now, she is contented with starting small, collecting clothes and food.

“Although things are hectic sometimes or the things you do go unnoticed, I will continue to break my back to help others.”

Cato says any donations of rice, vegetables or clothing would be appreciated.
