International theatre talks in Philippi

2017-05-02 06:01

The world is meeting in the city this month for some theatrical entertainment for the young.

A world congress and international children’s theatre festival will take place around Cape Town.

Cradle of Creativity, the 19th congress of the Association International du Theatre pour l’Enfance et la Jeunesse, takes place from Tuesday 16 to Saturday 27 May, and is a once-in-a-life time opportunity to see theatre for young audiences at one event which includes a world congress, festival and conference.

Cradle of Creativity is held in partnership with the South African National Arts Council.

The event offers rich diversity and opportunities for local audiences and artists, and will take place at Artscape, the Baxter and City Hall in the city centre.

Cradle of Creativity will also take place at cultural hubs in Atlantis, Gugulethu, Langa and Philippi over the weekend of 20 and 21 May.

The International Theatre Festival for Children and Young Audiences is an African festival. Productions on offer at the festival include works for babies, toddlers, children, tweens and teens.

In addition, the early years fringe programme of the festival at the Magnet Theatre will offer three days of work dedicated solely to theatre for children aged 0 to 7 from Wednesday 24 to Friday 26 May.

The conversation at this congress is made up of an intensive two-day academic conference on Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 May, organised by the International Theatre for Young Audiences Research Network in association with UCT’s Drama department and University of the Witwatersrand’s Drama for Life.

This is followed by a series of focus days, themed around aspects of theatre for youth such as theatre and/as education, theatre for social change, theatre for healing, theatre for the early years and dance theatre for young audiences.

The world congress will be a four-day meeting of representatives from nearly 100 countries.

Under the leadership of its president Yvette Hardie, the strategy for the next three years will be decided by the members of the 52-year-old organisation.
