Simphiwe Mgutyana has been sentenced to an effective 12 years in prison for the 2013 murder of Axolile Mgoqi in Phumlani Village.

Grassy Park police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith, says that after an investigation by Detective Sergeant Sicelo Bongashe, the then 36-year-old Mgutyana was arrested after Mgoqi (18) was found beaten to death in June 2013.

“It is alleged Mqoqi and Mgutyana had an argument over an identity book and Sassa card the deceased had of Mgutyana’s mother. Bongashe arrested Mgutyana the same day after all leads and information were followed up,” says Kleinsmith.

Branch commander, Lieutenant Colonel Ettiene van Ede, expressed his gratitude to Bongashe, who is from Grassy Park’s Serious and Violent Crimes Unit, for “his brilliant investigation and his commitment in the fight against crime. Police are working around the clock to prevent and combat crime.”

“Police have a reward system whereby good money is being awarded for positive information supplied to police about crime which results in the successful arrest and prosecution of criminals,” concludes Kleinsmith.

V Anyone with information on crime in the Grassy Park area is urged to call 021 700 3940 or Crime Stop on 0860 010 111. All information will be treated as highly confidential.
