Join garden party

With September heralding the start of spring, the Friends of Harfield Village Parks want more hands to help make the parks blossom.

Caroline Constant from the committee explains that this month they’re focussing on the community vegetable garden and the upcoming work party in Hampstead Park.

“We have 57 members and 188 people on the mailing list, yet hardly manage to get anyone to join us for the work parties,” she says. “During summer we clean and beautify our four parks with work parties once a month. This doesn’t give us much time to do all the things we’d love to do, but we can achieve wonders with many more helping hands. It’s a great opportunity for Harfielders to meet their neighbours, exchange news, teach their young ones how to plant and weed.”

Constant explains the next work party will take place on Saturday 24 September.

“We’ll be planting in what we call the Secret Garden and the Veggie Garden as well as along the newly painted charcoal wall next to the children’s play area. Any donation towards labour is always appreciated. We also need asparagus ferns, bark mulch, stones, bricks and sheeting. One of our members will be making some delicious egg rolls and coffee for refreshment.”

She says this is an organic community garden where residents can stroll down to pick a few leaves for a fresh salad and enjoy a diversity of wild life in the garden (birds, bees, butterflies, ladybirds, chameleons).

“Permaculture principles are followed in the garden so we ask that no poisons, herbicides or inorganic fertilisers are used,” she says. “Instead, we encourage the use of worm juice, mulch and manure. Google ‘permaculture’ to find out more about this lovely way of bringing food into our lives.”
