Join Princess Vlei Open Day

2019-03-19 06:00

The Princess Vlei Forum is inviting community members to an open day at League for the Friends of the Blind (Lofob) in First Road, Grassy Park on Wednesday 27 March between 18:00 and 20:00 to give feedback on recent improvements made at Princess Vlei, and give guidance for future projects.

The event will also launch the Heritage Oral History project which will record the history and experiences related to the Vlei.

Ongoing community consultation has been vital in guiding improvements at Princess Vlei. Five years ago, the Princess Vlei Forum launched a campaign to co-create a vision for the space with community members through workshops, surveys, and discussion. This vision has been revisited with communities regularly, and has guided engagement with the City of Cape Town to leverage resources and make this vision a reality. Recently, many of the proposals put forward by community members have been implemented. These include upgrading the parking area; the installation of a viewing platform; refurbishing the braai areas; upgrading the bridge over the southern canal and the installation of a BMX track. The City has deployed 24-hour security rangers to improve safety and reduce dumping.

In addition, the Princess Vlei Forum has employed a manager who is overseeing an ambitious project to restore the ecological integrity of the area.

These interventions are contributing to the creation of a vibrant natural recreational area, and have been well received by visitors. Further developments due to be implemented soon include a children’s playground and a circular track around the Vlei.

Registration will take place between 17:30 and 18:00, with a project showcase commencing at 18:00 and a group discussion from 19:00 around the proposed projects with a focus on the following issues:

. Safety, security and the prevention of vandalism at the Vlei, and how the community can assist in mitigating these risks.

. The proposal to establish a market at the Vlei – is it a good idea and how can it best benefit the community?

. How can the forum strengthen the protection for and status of Princess Vlei to conserve its ecological integrity now and in the future?

This will be followed by a short plenary discussion. Light refreshments will be served.

“We would like to urge community members to attend, and help us enrich and deepen this project. We rely on community input to ensure that work done at Princess Vlei is relevant and for the benefit of all,” says Bridget Pitt, Princess Vlei Forum secretary.
