Junction Rovers overwhelm Hout Bay

2016-02-23 06:00

Junction Rovers gave their ardent supporters from Heideveld something to smile about during their 3-0 victory over Hout Bay United at the Hout Bay Stadium this weekend.

It was a win that brought joy to Junction Rovers’ loyal fans but also to the players, who were determined to burn the midnight oil on the eve of the big examination.

This after the Heideveld side suffered a shock 2-1 away defeat last week at the hands of Two Oceans Academy in Bellville.

However, the much-needed three points from their 3-0 challenge against the Hout Bay outfit has enabled Junction Rovers to move up two places. They currently occupy third spot in the Safa Cape Town regional SAB League competition.

Junction Rovers, having played 15 matches to date, have accumulated 27 points. With a better goal difference they overshadowed Bonteheuwel-based South End, which is also on 27 points and occupies the third spot.

The Heideveld team made their intentions very clear from the outset. In fact, they meant business and took their crafty attacking style to their opponents, scoring goals on either side of the goalpost.

Two of several u.21 players in the Junction Rovers side once again proved to be a pain in the neck of defences as they mesmerised their opponents with their dribbling skills and deft touches.

Niyaaz Daniels showed great potential and has the makings of a five-star soccer player. He scored a brace that gave Junction Rovers a 2-0 cushion at the half-time break.

Shafiek Daniels rose to the occasion in similar fashion. He fired in goal number three from close range.

Liam Matthews, another fine goalkeeper in the making, was equal to the task and pulled off some great saves to secure a clean sheet.

Meanwhile, Mitchell’s Plain side Bayhill United continued to make steady progress up the ladder and are currently in sixth position with 24 points.

This, after Bayhill United beat Spice for Life 3-1 at the Rocklands sports complex on Saturday.

Rebels from Khayelitsha are not throwing in the towel in their challenge for league honours. Their 4-0 away win against Silver Spurs at Hickory Road has put them in the pound seats. They jointly occupy the top spot with Jomo Power on 32 points from 15 games apiece.

Jomo Power was held to a 2-2 draw against Shockwaves, while South End, after a string of match-winning results, were brought down to their knees while suffering a 2-1 away defeat against Jumbo Giants at the Dunoon sports complex.

Results: Junction Rovers 3, Hout Bay United 0; Jumbo Giants 2, South End 1; Bayhill United 3, Spice For Life 1; Shockwaves 2, Jomo Power 2; UWC 0, Riverside Rangers 0; Rebels 4, Silver Spurs 0; Two Oceans Academy 3, Battswood 1; D&G Orient 0, Bellstar United 0.
