By 14:30 on Wednesday 27 December, the total number of babies born on Christmas day across the province was just over the 200 mark.

A total of 203 babies – 94 boys and 109 girls – were tallied as sharing a birthday with the Christian faith’s own Jesus Christ.

The updated information on the births was released by the provincial health department on Wednesday.

“Tygerberg Hospital and Mowbray Maternity Hospital delivered the most Christmas babies, tallying 19 babies at Mowbray and 17 at Tygerberg Hospital,” said Simone Carelse, a health department spokesperson.

“Multiple births were reported at Delft Midwives Obstetric Unit (MOU), Beaufort West Hospital and Groote Schuur Hospital. All girls, the first sets of twins were born at Groote Schuur Hospital at 10:59 and 11:02, the second set were born at Delft MOU at 12:55 and the third set were born at Beaufort West Hospital at 20:58 and 21:00 on Christmas day,” she said.

“The first babies were born at 00:02 and 00:07 – one baby boy was born at Mitchell’s Plain District Hospital weighing 3360g and 56cm in length; while another baby boy was born at 00:07 at Wesfleur Hospital weighing 3230g and 50cm in length.”

The Western Cape's Health MEC, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, says: “I would like to congratulate all new parents with the birth of their bundles of joy on Christmas day. I wish them the very best. They deserve every bit of happiness that these little ones will bring”.

The Western Cape Government Health congratulated the parents and staff on the safe delivery of all the new arrivals on Christmas Day, yesterday.
