A 41-year-old man has been arrested in connection with illegal gun possession charges.

On Sunday 21 August at 02:15, Mitchell’s Plain police reservists members received information of an illegal firearm being kept at a home in Oppelskop Crescent, Tafelsig.

Officers searched the premises and found a 9mm Z88 pistol along with 13 rounds of ammunition in a magazine and another 9mm round.

The suspect was arrested and faces a charge of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The firearm was reported stolen in Strand during June 2007.

Police are urging gun owners to practice responsible firearm ownership and safety.

“We encourage the community to exercise responsible legal firearm ownership. Please ensure that your firearm is stored in a safe. Ensure that the key is in a safe place and the code is kept secret. Keep firearms away from children; teach children that a firearm is not a toy. Report any loss immediately,” says police spokesperson Captain Ian Williams.
