Keep Fish Hoek dry

2015-11-24 06:00

Last week I heard a rumour that the Pick n Pay Family Store in Fish Hoek is planning to make an application for an off-sales liquor licence. Over the weekend I spoke to one of the owners of the franchise and he confirmed that Pick n Pay is planning to make such an application.

It is understandable that any, in fact all, of the supermarkets and numerous convenience stores in Fish Hoek would like to have an off-sales liquor licence. After all, there are no such licences in Fish Hoek and the one who gets in first will expect to reap huge financial advantage.

I have no doubt that the management of Pick n Pay and all the supermarkets (Shoprite, Woolworths and Spar) and the convenience stores (at least 5 or 9 if you include the garage shops) all receive regular requests from customers for the sale of alcoholic beverages. It is understandable therefore that the management of these stores may be left with the impression that the people of Fish Hoek would be delighted if such licences were held by them.

There needs to be a balance struck. The purpose of this letter is to encourage residents of Fish Hoek, who share my view that the granting of any off-sales liquor licence will not be good for Fish Hoek, to write to the management of Pick n Pay and all the other supermarkets and let them know that there are many Fish Hoek residents who do not want any off-sales liquor licences in Fish Hoek.

Don’t write a long letter, just a short note asking them, as nicely as possible, not to make an application for an off-sales liquor licence.

I would like to keep track of correspondence on this subject. If you have email send me a copy to dryfishhoek@ Sorry, I do not have an email address for any of the stores.
