Keep safe over holidays

2019-06-18 06:00

Rondebosch Community Improvement District (RCID) is appealing to all residents to be vigilant as the school holidays have begun.

Shirley Aldum, RCID manager, says: “With children being at home during the day, please advise your family and staff not to allow anyone onto your property without your permission.

“It can happen so easily, and we all think it will not happen to us,” she says.

Aldum says two weeks ago in Jamieson Road, at 15:30, a man claiming to be a neighbour, asked if he could cut branches in the back garden.

“He was polite and friendly and the daughter, who did not want to appear unfriendly to a (possibly) ‘new neighbour’ allowed him inside. He asked her all sorts of questions regarding her lectures, times that she was at home and he then asked for their house remote as he would be coming and going all afternoon and would disturb her studying.

“She said no, but he became insistent. She gave it to him. He left and didn’t come back again, and the residents have checked with all their neighbours and he is definitely not known to anyone. What is also concerning is that he knew that the domestic had left and that she was alone at home,” says Aldum.
