Members of the Harlyn Neighbourhood Watch warn residents of Lynfrae and Harfield, Belvedere East Civic Association residents and local businessmen to be vigilant as crime has risen in the area. Derek Bluck, watch chairperson, says there has been an alarming increase in theft, including theft out of cars. He says the watch members would like the public to be extra careful and avoid leaving their belongings exposed. “Ensure that all valuables are kept safe, both at home and work. Simply leaving one’s valuables in plain sight and within easy reach is enough to create opportunity for these crimes to occur. Often valuable items such as electronic goods are targeted and will not necessarily be paid out for by insurance companies.”He adds that people must not leave their handbag dangling over the back of a chair in a restaurant, leave a cellphone on a desk or counter or leave a laptop, item of clothing and other package on a car seat as these are easy targets for thieves. “Help us to keep you and your family safe by securing your property and taking all necessary steps to prevent easy access to your possessions,” Bluck says.
