Around 60 children between the age of 12 and 18 spent their last few days of the holidays enjoying a fun holiday programme hosted by a local madrassa in partnership with the local government.

The programme was held in various locations including the Freedom Park pool hall, Tafelsig Daarul Ighsaan and Harmony Park from Tuesday 2 January to Monday 8 January. The initiative was hosted by Madrassa Roadha Tul Atfaal in partnership with the Department of Community Safety.

The madrassa also ran similar projects throughout last year.

“We started this initiative to empower the youth to explore different things, as they could choose which one they really like doing. We have various programmes on drug abuse etc. and we try doing different things, because each child suffers from different problems. We will continue with these events throughout the year, God willing,” says chairperson Fagmie Solomons.

The children came from Tafelsig and Freedom Park and had the opportunity to watch movies in the hall and were coached on how to play pool at their own local pool hall.

“We would like to thank each and every volunteer that assisted in these programmes: Mishqa Allie, Soeraya Barron, Samia Stoffels, Galiek and Shahiedah Saville, Soemaya de Villiers, Faghrie Moosa and the kitchen staff, Moesidah and Suleiman Solomons, as well as Rafeedah Isaacs and also the owners of the pool hall, Scharky and Shariefa Job,” says Solomons.

Madrassa Roadha Tul Atfaal is an Islamic school that operates during the week as well as on a Saturdays for young students wishing to do Islamic studies.
