A flair for fashion and empowerment has set a Lansdowne woman winning.

Amiena Pastor was nominated at this month’s Margaret Hirsch Women in Business Achiever (MHWIBA) Breakfast hosted at Hirsch Milnerton.

Through The Design Platform, Pastor inspires girls and women in communities that have the desire and ability to create a business but lack the qualification and funding.

Her passion for fashion and women’s empowerment is a good fit with her latest title, the Margaret Hirsch Women in Business Achiever Finalist for May 2016.

Pastor studied a fashion design course at Elizabeth Galloway and then completed her in-service training at Mon Viso Knitwear where she nurtured her love for bridal design, and this led to her starting her own bridal company from home.

She was headhunted by top designer Errol Arendz with whom she worked for two years, and her desire to give back to the community became ever stronger.

Pastor then threw herself full-time into her bridal business but when a burglary set her back financially she was emotionally not in the right place to design, so instead she turned to selling Tupperware and Sh’zen products.

It was during this time Pastor and another entrepeneur cam up with the market day concept. The I Deserve It project was initiated in 2010 and registered in 2012 as a non-profit organisation that sets up platforms in the form of pop-up shops or market days.

They also teach women with a love for design the skills they need to be empowered, like making their own patterns and basic sewing skills.

Since then the idea has mutated into a company, The Design Platform, which is aimed at designers who beyond market days. Needless to say, Pastor’s determination to use design as her vessel for women’s empowerment, enthralled the audience.
