Large donation for women’s shelter

For more than six years the Philisa Abafazi Bethu organisation in Lavender Hill has been working to help abused woman and children.

With a safe house in Wynberg the organisation has offered a place of comfort for those who face domestic violence.

Being fully dependent on donations has not discouraged this hard work.

KFM, in partnership with the Dis-Chem Foundation, donated R80 000 to the organisation last Tuesday, to help it continue its work.

The Foundation’s Penny Stein says: “Through my work at the Dis-Chem Foundation, I have visited many safe houses and I can confidently say that it takes an incredibly special person to provide support to the women and children who come through their door.”

Lucinda Evans, founder of Philisa Abafazi Bethu, says they are grateful for the donation and it will go a long way in helping them.

Evans hopes to use the money to pay safe house’s outstanding bills.

They will also look into buying new beds for the safe house. Currently they have 10 beds and one emergency bed for any elderly person. She will meet with the donors and hear how they are hoping the money will be spent.

In the organisation’s existence this is the biggest donation it has received.

“It’s really a nice thing when people see you work and they open their arms to support whatever you’re doing. After working for years this is really something great,” Evans says.
