If you want to make a difference in someone’s life or just experience your first surfing lesson, you can visit Surf Emporium in Muizenberg to experience this unique opportunity for one day.

You’ll receive a surfing lesson followed by volunteering as part of the team facilitating an adaptive surfing lesson for individuals with disabilities.

“This is a way for businesses to support adaptive surfing by hosting their next team-building or year-end function in a fun way that also gives back.

“Not only will you experience the joy of learning to surf but you are also assisting a person with disabilities in learning to surf and sharing this stoke with someone who never thought surfing was a possibility,” says Natasha Capes, spokesperson for Surf Emporium in Muizenberg.

To top it all you will meet the adaptive surfing national team representing South Africa at the 2018 Stance ISA World Adaptive Surfing Championships taking place from Wednesday 12 to Sunday 16 December in La Jolla, California.

“In participating in the Surf Emporium surfing lesson and adaptive surfing morning experience, businesses will help in creating awareness for adaptive surfing in South Africa and support our national team to get to the World Championships,” she says.

The SA adaptive surfing team is self-funded and needs as much support as possible to get to California.

“There is clear evidence in research suggesting that surfing is a form of therapy and rehabilitation for both able-bodied and disabled-bodied surfers alike. Surf Emporium and Adaptive Surfing have partnered to afford people with disabilities the opportunity to surf in private lessons and group lessons and participate in adaptive surfing days.

“Adaptive Surfing needs support in order to fund the free adaptive surfing clinics for people with disabilities that could not usually afford to participate. By participating in a morning experience you will better understand the challenges that adaptive surfers face,” Capes says.

SA team captain and gold medallist, Anthony Smyth, and his team will be present to guide you and you can also share your personal experience via social media as part of the adaptive surfing awareness campaign.

“Depending on the participant’s disability, each adaptive surfer needs one to two professionally qualified adaptive surfing coaches and up to 10 volunteers per surfer. You will meet the adaptive surfers, hearing their stories and what made them decide to have the courage to start surfing. You will be participating in the adaptive surfing lesson in the capacity of ‘volunteer support’ under the guidance of the professionally qualified Surf Emporium adaptive surfing coaches,” she says.

By participating and spreading the word you offer even more people with disabilities the opportunity to participate in adaptive surfing.
