Some learners of Plantation Road Primary School in Grassy Park are on the run, and they’re enjoying it.

Their running is for a new activity at the school: Cross country competitions.

One of the school’s athletics coaches, Mervyn Amos, started cross country at the school and is hoping more learners will join during the season.

“I was looking at an activity to keep them fit for next year and cross country running seems to be the perfect plan.

“We chose 36 learners for this first year from u.8 to u.12 and the children have been enjoying it. They practise on Tuesdays from 07:00 to 08:00 and they’ve become very dedicated to it, even if the weather is cold.”

Amos adds that competitions are held at various venues across the peninsula on Fridays and the season ended earlier this month.

“I think that travelling to the competitions was part of the fun for them but they were surprised at how many of their peers were also participating.

“Every week they did better than the previous week and I always tell them: ‘Just try to beat the person in front of you.’ Next year we will be stronger.”
