The Schools Eco Art Campaign was launched at Longbeach mall last Thursday.

The event was attended by various school principals, teachers, parents, Fish Hoek 100 and beyond committee members, executives and staff from Growthpoint Properties to mention but a few.

Learners were encouraged to take part in local community cleanups to gather material for their art pieces as all art must be produced from recycled materials.

The campaign has been running since February and the art gallery is now open to the public until Thursday 10 May for everyone to come view and vote for their favourite recycled art piece.

The top 20 entries are being displayed in centre and mall customers can vote for their favourite art piece per category either in the centre or online. Entries will be displayed with an educational message of what waste was used for the project and the impact waste has on the earth in the long run.

Learners had until 13 April to submit their artworks to the mall where local community artist, Irene Oxley and Stefanie Swanepoel of African Earth Rights selected the top 20 entries from each category.

As part of the run up to the competition Longbeach Mall marketing manager, Janine Davidson, and Candice Mostert of Waste-Ed have been conducting workshops at schools to educate the learners on waste and recycling.

Davidson says the entries blew her away. “They were such amazing entries. To see all this come to life and materialise just the way as I imagined it was amazing. Now it is time to get voting for your favourite art piece,” she says.V For more information call Davidson on 021 785 5955
