Three Grade 7 learners from Kommetjie Primary School completed the Two Oceans Aquarium Smart Living outreach programme.

Jessica Bagley and Erin Middleton earned a gold status certificate, and Rosemary Colenso earned a diamond status certificate on completion of the course which teaches Grades 6 to 12 learners about waste, water, energy and protecting biodiversity.

After completing the course, they had to present a speech on Smart Living and introduce an environmental concept to the audience. They also did presentations to their peers who also completed the course.

Jessica spoke to learners at the Desmond Tutu Foundation in Masiphumelele. She introduced them to eco-bricks as a solution for plastic pollution. She also raised awareness of the collection of bread tags and bottle tops and told them about a paper drive at Fish Hoek High School planned for Wednesday 27 November.

Erin spoke to Kommetjie Primary School learners about the effects of plastic pollution on the oceans. She spoke about the five gyres in the ocean that are home to many plastic islands. She organised a bicycle-to-school day to reduce each child’s carbon footprint.

Rosemary also addressed Kommetjie Primary School. She spoke about harmful waste products; the toxic wastewater product, leachate; and micro-plastics. One idea was to reduce the use of cling wrap or tin foil for school lunches. Alternatives suggested were brown paper bags or a reusable cotton cloth tied with a ribbon. She also spoke about recycling and encouraged beach clean-ups and taking your own material bag to the shop instead of buying plastic bags.

During the Smart Living programme, learners went on two outings – to the Green Point Eco Park and to the Coastal Park Landfill site.
