The Grade 12 learners at Tafelsig High School had the opportunity to see the inner workings of a provincial parliamentary sitting last Wednesday.

The class of 2018 was hosted at the Provincial Parliament by member of Parliament Ricardo Mackenzie.

“This was for Human Rights Day and to discuss the role of Parliament. The learners were also addressed by Premier Helen Zille, where she discussed their career choices and motivated them to do better this year,” says Mackenzie.

“I chose Tafelsig High School as it is in my constituency, and I will make the opportunity available for other schools in the near future.”

Around 80 learners attended the event.

“The initiative is important so that we can explain and share public service opportunities such as jobs in government and professions in government with the learners. It is also important so that learners can see where their government and parliament works from and question us as parliamentarians in Parliament. It was also the Provincial Department of Education’s budget vote,” he says.

The learners were given a front-row seat to learn how the R22bn will be spent this year.

The learners were also encouraged to use all opportunities available at their disposal.

“They are the future leaders, doctors and lawyers of South Africa and [I encouraged them] to study and work hard. This was the same message shared by Premier Helen Zille. I also told them to stay motivated regardless of their challenges and that they will succeed in life.”
