Legacy Cup kicks off

2018-09-25 06:00

Sixteen schools will contest the third Gavin Manuel Memorial Schools Legacy Cup on Monday 1 and Tuesday 2 October at Rocklands High School from 09:00 to 16:00.

The tournament is named after Gavin Manuel who was an educator, coach, manager and referee who was at the forefront of high school football in the Western Province in the 1980s.

The defending champions are Livingstone High in Claremont and Oval North High in Beacon Valley in Mitchell’s Plain.

The high schools that will be contesting the cup are Aloe, Beacon Hill, Cedar, Cloetesville, Glendale, Mondale, Muizenberg, Ocean View, Oval North, Oude Molen, Portland, Princeton, Rocklands, Spine Road, Westridge and Zeekoevlei.

The competition will be in a round-robin format where four teams will be placed in four groups. The top two teams in each group progress to the winners’ quarter-finals and the bottom two to the plate quarter-finals.

“Each school plays three games on day one and three games on day two to play for final log positions. There is no prize money up for grabs but the three teams that finish in positions one, two and three in the winners’ section will receive a trophy and medals. The winners of the plate will only receive a trophy,” says Sean Campbell, tournament director.

Individual trophies for player of the tournament, best goalkeeper and top goal scorer will also be awarded.

The tournament is aimed at u.16 players and the prime focus is to promote healthy competition between competing schools and to mimic the legendary September Schools Tournament that Manuel started and successfully managed since 1985.

“The first tournament was hosted at Rocklands High in 2016. Ambassadors are ex-players like Isaac Arendse, Duncan Crowie, Edries Burton, Nasief Morris, Gerald Stober, Kamaal Sait and Jerome Damon,” says Campbell.
