The Kommetjie Library will be closed until the first week of April as almost R400 000 worth of maintenance gets underway. It is part of a scheduled repairs and maintenance programme for library buildings, says Eddie Andrews, Mayco member (South).“The library maintenance will result in several improvements: to the library’s appearance, the visitor experience, the workplace for staff and security, along with preventing further deterioration of the building,” he says. The project will see the installation of a fire-compliant emergency exit door. The exterior of the building will be painted, some trees will be removed, the shed roof replaced, woodwork will be treated and a fence installed in front of the building. A ramp from street level for wheelchair access will be added, says Andrews.Inside the building, upgrades include painting, replacement of carpets and tiling and upgrades to the toilets and kitchen. Woodwork will be treated and new wall fans will be installed. Lighting will be upgraded throughout the library. In addition, the computer area will be increased from two to four stations and the issue desk will be extended. While the library is closed, visitors should use the nearby libraries in Ocean View, Simon’s Town and Fish Hoek.
