Life sentences for teen’s killer

2017-06-20 06:00

A Masiphumelele man has been given two life sentences for the rape and murder of local teenager Amani Pula.

The 14-year-old boy was raped and murdered in September 2015. Amani’s uncle arrived home and found the door open. On entering, he found the house in disarray and the body of his nephew (“Masi perform mob justice”, People’s Post, 22 September 2015).

The murder sparked a series of riots and vigilante incidents in the area. Mob justice saw a 27-year-old man killed when residents confronted a suspect. A second suspect was assaulted and died in hospital from the injuries.

Police arrested Mxolisi Rwanqa for Amani’s rape and murder, as well as the rape of a woman earlier on the same day.

Rwanqa was sentenced to the two life sentences for the attack on Pula, as well as another 15 years for the woman’s rape. He was sentenced to a further one year for house robbery and five years for the possession of stolen goods.

Kathy Cronje, Ocean View Community Policing Forum chairperson, has congratulated local police officers on the conviction.
