Light for single mother

2018-06-05 06:00

Officials from the Western Cape Government made their way to the Benn family in Pam Walk last week, after hearing about their ongoing struggle (“Mouse bite lands boy (4) in hospital”, People’s Post, 29 May).

The Western Cape Government’s Home Community-Based Care (HCBC), among other departments, visited the family on Monday morning, for a health assessment and to provide the necessary health follow-up support to the family and the child on discharge, says Monique Johnstone, the communications officer for the Western Cape Department of Health.

The Western Cape Department of Social Development (DSD) also responded to the call for assistance and obtained the family’s details.

They promised to assist the Benn family, after speaking to People’s Post last Monday.

“A social worker from the department-funded NGO, Cape Town Child Welfare Society, has this week visited the family to conduct a safety and risk assessment to ascertain what assistance could be offered,” explains Esther Lewis, head of communications for DSD.

“The social worker will assist with the family’s motivation for the housing application process, and will continue to monitor progress with the family.

“A community member has offered assistance with temporary accommodation for the family.”

Firduas Benn, a single mother to three severely ill children, says she is relieved about the visits from the departments.

“They (departments) were here to help me with the kids.

“They promised to try and get me a place to stay when the eviction happens, so that my children will be sorted at least.

“They will get back to me this week.

“This is a positive response and I hope they keep to their word inshallah,” adds Benn.

Benn and her children will move in with Manenberg Safety Forum chairperson, Roegshanda Pascoe until alternative accommodation can be found to improve the safety of her ill children.
