As part of their continuous fulfilment of their mandate, the Mitchell’s Plain Lions Club is reaching out to residents in more ways than one.

This includes the recent addition of the free Diabetics Club run at the Westridge Gardens as part of the Mitchell’s Plain Urban Market.

Veronica Vember, a Lion and registered nurse, started the initiative before the establishment of the Lions Club as the Westridge, Bayview and Strandfontein Diabetics Support Group, which still runs, and this was added to further expand on their reach.

“Working in a vascular unit at Kingsbury Hospital and observing the complications of diabetes switched on a light of concern for my community. The need for this free testing is to promote extended primary healthcare to bring about awareness at no cost. Because of me being an active Lion as well, I committed myself to do diabetes promotion as a means of stepping out and sharing my knowledge,” says Vember.

She is the founder of Westridge, Strandfontein, Bayview and Pelican Park diabetic clubs.

“This is a vision supported by 20 volunteers who render continuous services for the project. Westridge Gardens is an initiative by the Lions of Mitchell’s Plain to give back to the community,” she says.

The support groups meet monthly at their respective venues and training for volunteers takes place twice a year, depending on the need.

“At the urban market we will do blood pressure/blood glucose and cholesterol testing,” says Vember.

There will also be information and doctor referrals for any abnormalities.

V The Mitchell’s Plain Lions Diabetic Club will be at Westridge Gardens on Saturday 2 June. Call facilitator, Sandra Lewis, on 078 903 7233, or Veronica Vember on 021 393 2562.
