Litter problem to be binned

2018-08-28 06:00

The Fish Hoek Business Improvement District (FHBID) is appealing to commuters that use the taxi rank and train station at Beach and Station roads to use the current litter bins at their disposal until more and bigger bins are installed.

This was the FHBID’s response when People’s Post enquired about a complaint from a resident of Fish Hoek who was unhappy about the papers, tins, foam cups and containers lying in the vicinity of the taxi rank and train station.

“Every morning at 07:00 we wash Main, Station and Beach roads with non-potable water, and cleaners from the Expanded Public Works Programme sweep the streets. We are aware that the current green dirt bins are not adequate and are waiting on bigger bins to address the litter problem at the station and taxi rank,” says Riaan Bester, manager of the FHBID.

According to Bester the area is a hotspot as residents from Ocean View, Masiphumelele and Simon’s Town frequently use the taxis and trains to and from Fish Hoek Station as a thoroughfare to other destinations.

“More than 200 taxis are in operation to and from the station and taxi rank with more than 1000 commuters travelling daily. Sometimes we find dirt on top of the bins and when it is windy you can expect that the dirt will be blown from the dirt bin in the streets,” Bester said.

In a meeting held recently with the local ward councillor, Felicity Purchase, he raised the problem of the small bins and she promised that she would look into getting bigger bins on the streets and at the taxi rank and train station.

“I have asked the different departments at the City of Cape Town to provide additional bins to accommodate the refuse. We provide daily cleaning and sweeping of the area to keep Fish Hoek litter free,” Purchase says.

Bester says the FHBID has an open-door policy and if residents have any queries or problems they are welcome to contact them.
