Little charity makes a big difference

A literacy charity will be opening its doors in Muizenberg on Saturday 10 September, with a public launch.

Little Zebra Books, a Christian charity that produces and distributes books for children in Mozambique, has opened its headquarters in Muizenberg. They will be hosting a grand opening on from 15:00 to 17:00 at Shop 1, Cedar Lodge on 79 Main Road.

The organisation printed 90 000 books for children in Mozambique last year, says director David Ker. “This year we’re planning to print more than 250 000 books in five different Mozambican languages.” While they produce a small number of books in South African languages, the emphasis is on Mozambique, Ker explains.

“Mozambique has the lowest literacy rates in the (Southern African) region. And we feel that many excellent organisations are already producing books for South African languages. That’s why we’ve made Mozambique our top priority.

“Little Zebra Books prints all our books locally and many of our artists and designers are in the False Bay area,” he says.

Until recently, the small charity was operating out of Ker’s home.

“The time has come to begin establishing Little Zebra Books in its own right. We’ve been working in this area for more than three years but few people have been aware of what we’re doing.”

According to Ker, the new location is already paying big dividends. “Even before we opened we put a simple sign in the window and I was amazed at how many people began to tell me that they’d seen our new shop.”
